A Tale of Aspirin and Friends
Aspirin: Good cop – bad cop?
If there was a substance that has seen the heights of acclaim and the lows of condemnation as often as the common aspirin this author would welcome enlightenment. The product of the willow tree, source of much relief to the human brow and body, yet scorned by the “enlightened experts” at different phases of the moon or sun – not sure which.
Not so long ago the regular consumption of aspirin was recommended to reduce chance of heart attack and cancer.
Then the doomsayers cast their chicken entrails on the ground and declared the Aspirin was a bad thing – it could cause strokes, bleeding of the stomach lining, bleeding just about anywhere else, it could also cause heart attacks
– It was a Public Health menace!
The latest advice for those over 50yrs or so is to take aspirin to reduce the risk of heart attack and cancer – sounds familiar?
Of course one needs to be circumspect in taking a substance like aspirin over a long time – years. The medical advice today indicates a 75mg measure (tablet) once a day. If you are considering going along the aspirin route do check with your physician BEFORE you start. Some meds do not go with aspirin. A short history of aspirin is here
Can’t wait for the next round of vilification….
In the meantime, one of the attributes of aspirin is as a Non-Steroidal Anti-Inflammatory (NSAID). NSAIDs are remarked upon for their other role of reducing the risk of Cancer and a first Heart Attack.
Now that does infer a relationship to the claim “the regular taking of aspirin may reduce the risk of cancer” as well as other things.
Worth investigating, perhaps.
A very effective natural anti-inflammatory (support) material comes from the New Zealand Green Mussel shellfish – no protein, so OK for shellfish-allergy sufferers. More information about this Natural material can be obtained here (US Office) or here (UK Office) – select the office closest to you!
